Alizon's and the environment

The footprint trustWe live close to both beaches and areas of outstanding natural beauty which gives us a daily reminder of our place on this planet and pushes us to do what we can. We believe it is beholden on all of us to minimise this damage so that future generations find it in a better state than when we inherited it.

At the core of our policy is your care and enjoyment, we believe that your stay with us can achieve this with the minimum damage to the environment and at the same time we can offer you wholesome food, a warm and friendly atmosphere in a house where we have done (and continue to do) what we can to minimise our impact.

We know that many of you are already committed to building a sustainable way of life, and when you stay at Alizons you become part of our holistic approach.

Our veg garden

How you can help:

  • Bedding and towels changed only at your request.
  • Turn out lights when you leave rooms (the hall lights are left on as a safety precaution).
  • We will make sure that the standby on appliances are switched off (it is estimated that the equivalent of 2 power stations would be saved if everyone did just that)
  • Shut all doors to keep the heat in
  • We recycle all cans, paper and bottles, cardboard and plastics; vegetable matter is composted and used on the garden.

Heating and Water:

  • All our electricity comes from renewable sources.
  • All our gas is supported by carbon offsetting.
  • Our water comes from the mains and is metered.
  • We extensively use recovered water for all our garden needs.

Food:

  • Fruit and vegetable - what we dont grow we buy locally.
  • Meat – All our meat comes from local sources.
  • Eggs - free range hens eggs from our own back garden coops, where this doesn't meet our needs we source from local back garden coops.
  • The majority of other food is bought locally to benefit the local economy and to support local jobs.
  • All our tea, sugar and coffee come from Fair-trade sources. Other products , subject to availability, from Fair-trade sources.

Our garden is planted to grow fruit and vegetables with a chicken coop housing 5 chickens, this supplies both the B&B and ourselves, you will not find it all manicured but hopefully a combination of the potted flowers on the deck, from where you can enjoy the outdoors, and the vegetable garden creates a nice mix.

We hope you appreciate what we are trying to achieve at Alizon's, demonstrating it is possible to have a warm and pleasant guest house with good wholesome food, gardens that thrive with life and yet having the minimum impact on our environment, in other words (sorry for the jargon) a sustainable product.
