Cycling the isle of wight

In november 2009 the lonely plant guide to destinations to visit in 2010 named the Isle of Wight as one of the top 10 places in the world to visit for cycling.

The Isle of Wight is a cycling paradise that is home to some of the UK’s most varied terrain: lush velvet hills rolling into the sea, narrow lanes through tidy hedgerows, deep and mysterious green gullies, and the island’s most striking feature, the ridge of white chalk cliffs stretching across its breadth.

There are cycling routes to suit everyone, with a choice of challenging off-road bridleways, peaceful byways and level purpose-made tracks on former railway lines.

Cycling the wight

Within an area of just 147 square miles you will find over 200 miles of cycle routes enticing you into the countryside or along the coast

Obviously we can only provide limited information on this website, please feel free to contact us, we are more then happy to discuss route options for all ages/abilities covering the type of cycling you wish to do.

The round the island cycle route passes our front door with a number of cycling locations within easy reach offering something for all abilities. The circular route to shanklin and niton (12 miles) makes an ideal way to see the countryside and the coast, being on the midpoint of the route it can be shortened if required.

Every year the Island hosts the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival, which features several different cycling events for all abilities and disciplines. There is an on-road 62 mile round the Island race known as "Cycle The Wight", or for the more resilient cyclist, the 3, 7 and 14 hills challenges known as "The Hills Killer" are a real test of stamina.

For off road cycling the prime spot without doubt to go is Brighstone Forest. This is the island's largest woodland area, which is part private and part controlled by Forest Enterprise. Either way, access is not a problem for both rights of way and unofficial tracks. The annual Wight Max event in early June has part of it's cross country course laid out over sections of the forest, although you cannot do the whole route at other times of the year since it goes through farmland and a quarry.

The Extremists mountainbike club have created a round the island route that is 90% offroad, the randonnee gives full details, we are located a short distance from wroxall on map 6.

It is worth noting that it is free to bring a cycle over on the vehicle carrying ferries. Alternatively, if you prefer you can hire one when you arrive on the Island. With free delivery and collection to any Island location and free helmets included, this is a popular option. Hire charges are around £ 60 per week for an adult bike, if you require further information then please let us know.
